From the Family Farm to National Thought Leadership
Cari grew up on a seedstock Simmental cattle farm in Shelbyville, Illinois, where agriculture was not a concept but a daily responsibility. From a young age, she was immersed in the realities of farming, livestock care, land stewardship, and family enterprise. She participated in 4-H and FFA livestock programs at both the state and national levels, experiences that instilled discipline, accountability, and respect for long-term planning.
Her academic path began with an associate’s degree in Agricultural Science, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Texas A&M University. While at Texas A&M, Cari was selected for All-American judging teams, further deepening her understanding of agriculture as both a science and a business.
Cari went on to earn her Juris Doctor from Pace University School of Law, completing certificates in Environmental Law and International Law. Her legal education exposed her to regulatory frameworks, land use issues, environmental policy, and international perspectives that continue to inform her work in agricultural and food law today.
Early in her legal career, Cari practiced agricultural, environmental, natural resource, and commercial law in the Western United States. This experience gave her a national perspective on land-based industries, regulatory challenges, and the intersection of law, policy, and rural communities.
